The clocks have sprung forward... now is the perfect time for a closet cleanse. I love a good cleanout! Purging your wardrobe of unnecessary items provides a fresh perspective on your style. Additionally, an organized closet allows you to save time when getting dressed in the morning. I know I could use a little extra coffee time to ease into the day!
STEP 1: FOCUS ON ONE SECTION AT A TIME
Instead of blowing up your entire closet at once, try starting on one side of your closet and working your way across. This way, when (not if) you need to take a break, you can step away without leaving your closet in chaos. Committing to a closet clean-out can feel like a formidable task if you try to tackle it all at once. Take the time to pull things out, try them on, and make intentional decisions.
STEP 2: ASK YOURSELF THE HARD QUESTIONS
Time to give each item in your closet the spotlight it deserves! Holding onto clothes you no longer wear isn't doing you any favors—they're just "squatting" in your precious closet space. Let's make some decisions and free up room for the pieces that truly make you shine.
Start with fit. Try each item on and stand in front of a full-length mirror.
- Does this fit properly?
- Is this comfortable & flattering? Can I move freely?
- Is this too big? Will I make the effort and investment to have it altered?
- Is this too small? Will I realistically be able to fit into this again?
Now let's consider the condition. Inspect each item and look for any damage or defects.
- Is this in wearable condition? Is it stained, torn, missing buttons, have a broken zipper, or otherwise damaged?
- Can this be repaired? Will I make the effort and investment to repair it?
Lastly, let's delve into style. If you answer no, it needs to go!
- Have I worn this in the last year?
- Will I (realistically) wear this again? Where would I possibly wear it?
- Is this piece still vibing with my current style and the image I want to project?
- If I went shopping today, would I buy this?
- Do I feel confident wearing this?
STEP 3: GET ORGANIZED
When everything has a place, you don't waste time looking for it! I like to organize by category. Sweaters, tops, dresses, pants, skirts—they each deserve their own special spot in your closet. By creating dedicated "zones" for each category, you will streamline your wardrobe. If you've ever been into Color Game, it should be no surprise that I go the extra mile and sort each group into color.
STEP 4: STORE IT CORRECTLY
I prefer to hang everything I can so it's easily visible and accessible. That said, you have to consider your own space and the items in it.
- Always wash or dry clean clothing before packing it away for the season. Storing unclean items can lead to permanent stains—hidden sugars from champagne or food spills may resurface as dark spots!
- Delicate and/or heavy knits should be folded to prevent damage and stretching.
- If you prefer to store gowns and precious items in garment bags, be sure to use breathable fabric. Storing
- Rolling leggings and jeans and storing them vertically makes them easy to spot by color.
- Lingerie drawer cubes/organizers are the obvious choice for undergarments and socks but they also make great storage for smaller tanks and camis.
STEP 5: MERCHANDISE IT
Treat yourself to tools and products that elevate your closet’s look while simplifying organization. The secret to maintaining an organized space is making it easy to put things away each night. Bins, shelf dividers, belt and scarf hangers, and shoe racks enable quick cleanup—no matter how challenging your day.
